Non-obvious solutions

1. Grab the end of the wrapper.
2. Peel it diagonally downwards, so that the wrapper comes off in one continuous spiral.
3. Whenever you deem fit, pull what remains of the wrapper straight down off the straw.

The other way, which I’ve used for years, is to push the wrapper down into the table, effectively using the table to push the straw up out of the wrapper. This usually works, but not always, and it’s certainly more work.
